Devonta Freeman Reveals Why He Incorporates Boxing Into His Offseason Workouts

Even during his offseason, professional football player Devonta Freeman does not take a break!

While one would assume pro athletes dedicate their gym time to building strength and honing sport-specific plays, Freeman shares that in the offseason, he actually incorporates another sport into his workout routine: boxing.

Freeman first started boxing right after finishing his rookie season and it quickly transitioned from a casual hobby into a vital part of his training.

“It’s tiring, it’s tough. You’re competing with yourself even when you’re tired,” says Freeman in the video above.

“You translate that down on the football field,” he continues, noting that many of the skills he has learned in boxing have proven beneficial on the football field.

The high intensity and quick decision making of boxing mimic the fast plays and quick decisions that Freeman is faced with in football games.

“When I’m boxing, I do thirty second rounds, and then on the football field one play is eight seconds. I need to be able to perform at a high level.”

He also calls out that since the season is so serious, in the offseason, he likes to keep his workouts fun. Mixing up his routine in this way does just that.

“We just go at it all day. It’s fun! It takes you to a different mental.”
