The Playlist Shuffle Feature Is DJ Hannah Rad’s Workout Motivator
Whether she’s DJing at the hottest club in LA or hitting the gym, one thing is for certain: You will never catch Hannah Rad standing still.
“I think my energy walks into the room way before I do,” she says. “It's just born within me, and I can't help it. Sorry world, I'm energetic.”
Rad is part of Reebok’s Fusion series, which pays tribute to the brand’s newly released Flexweave Fusion sneaker by profiling individuals who fuse their passion for fitness with their art. Rad’s art is her music, and she plays to packed venues regularly. If you catch her at one of her sets, you’re likely to see her jamming out, lost in the music—and she hopes you’ll do the same.
“When I DJ, I focus on playing stuff that's going to get people moving, and probably dancing and sweating as much as I do behind the turntables. I'm nonstop energy and nonstop motion as well.”

Ask Rad to pinpoint the moment she first felt a deeper connection to music, and she’ll tell you it’s simply in her DNA. She says her dad shared his love of music with her from an early age. He would even record top-10 music video countdowns for her as a child.
“He had a big impact on the music that I love now—always very high-energy, full of lots of passion and emotion, whether that's rock, hip-hop, pop or dance music.”
Rad has always had this surplus of energy, and she’s always found ways to let it out, including through high school sports and hiking.
When she grew up and started working full time, though, working out didn’t always fit into her schedule, so she resorted to caffeine or sugar for an extra jolt of energy. But when that stopped doing the trick, she knew it was time to go back to her organic energy booster: working out. Now she can’t live without it.
The nature of Rad’s work requires her to travel frequently, however, making it a challenge to keep up a fitness routine. But she believes that traveling has actually helped her improve her fitness; it has taught her that you can still get in a good workout even when staying in a small hotel room.
“Do some crunches, do some planks, do something that's going to still burn a few calories. I think exercise is vital when you're on the road because it starts your day properly and it just keeps you in the right mindset.”

Using the extra energy boost from her workouts, she’s able to get up on stage and give the audience a set to remember. And the more she works out, the more energized she feels. She feels the impact exercise has had on her in every aspect of her life, from spending time biking with her girlfriend to jamming out behind the turntables.
And just like her DJ set, where she’s known to blend sounds and beats from different genres to create something totally unique, she loves to switch up her fitness activities, focusing on one thing for a few months before moving to something completely different.
“Now having learned different disciplines, whether it's running or cycling or lifting weights or just doing core work, I can pull little elements from each of those, and create and craft a different workout every day.”
Rad mixes up her workout playlists, too. Alternating between artists and genres, she never knows where it will take her. She says that the shuffle function is almost like having a personal trainer—you never know what’s coming next.
“Am I riding fast? Am I riding slow? I don't know, but shuffle's going to tell me,” she laughs.
So, when can we expect to see Rad slow down some?
“I don't know at what point or what age [my energy] might not be there, but knock on wood, I'm good for now, and I think it just propels me forward.”
